Don't Bet Your Business on Commercial MTAs
The Only Constant is Change
Every time you install a commercially licensed piece of software you take a risk.
Why?
Because ending the relationship with your vendor means ending the use of that key piece of infrastructure, which means licensing a replacement solution, migrating your systems to the new solution, and paying for both solutions during the transition.
And the reasons for ending that relationship are numerous:
- When the vendor is bought by investors or Private Equity looking to maximize the return on their new investment, it always means raising prices and cutting costs.
- The vendor may get caught up in feature-creep, adding new marketecture that you don't need but which you're required to pay extra for going forward.
- The vendor could go out of business or abandon their product in favor of something their new leadership finds more lucrative, leaving you with abandonware at best.
- It could even be as simple as the vendor being unreliable in issuing new license keys, leading to outages that have you scrambling to get the vendor on the line to issue a renewed key.
Even if you trust the team you're dealing with now, there's absolutely no guarantee you'll be dealing with the same team come renewal time. You may find yourself with no choice but to accept the changes the new team brings or risk losing use of critical business infrastructure.

The Solution is Open-Source
"Open-Source Means They Can't Take it Away From You"
KumoMTA is Open-Source under the Apache 2 license, hosted in a public repository for all to see and access, and is supported and maintained by a team funded by our sponsors.
Our sponsors and users don't have to trust our team because the Open-Source license we selected prevents us (or our successors) from taking away access to KumoMTA or forcing users into restrictive agreements, meaning they can depend on KumoMTA to run their mission-critical email infrastructure without interference or interruption.
Our customers and users also don't have to trust that KumoMTA is secure, they can examine the source code and run their own security scanning tools instead of trusting that a closed-source vendor is following best practices for code security.
Open-Source software is ubiquitous, and odds are your business already depends on Open-Source software somewhere in your technology stack. A recent survey showed that 78% of all businesses are using Open-Source software in some capacity.
Enterprise-Grade Email Infrastructure
Fast
KumoMTA is architected for the performance needed by enterprise senders, whether it's sending several million messages per hour through a single server, or scaling horizontally using Docker and Kubernetes.
Flexible
KumoMTA can replace straightforward configurations or be deeply integrated into your MailOps environment thanks to our Lua scripting engine. If you can imagine it, KumoMTA can do it. This flexibility increases speed to market and minimizes the need to build out support for new standards into your existing stack.
Modern
Kumo is Japanese for "cloud", a name we chose because of the focus we have on modern DevOps practices and technologies. KumoMTA includes support for technologies including webhooks, AMQP, Kafka, Vault, Prometheus, Grafana, and direct database access.

Ben Dyer
"We’ve known Kumo’s founders and worked with them for many years, That personal connection was critical.
The fact they’re involved was enough to get us over the line to becoming a customer."

CEO
Tom Kuzler
"I really enjoy our MTA being open source and being able to see the issue and commit pipelines. It gives us a lot of transparency around where issues might sit that we never had before with a closed source MTA and lets us transparently know when bugs that are important to us are resolved. The pace of iteration and change that ultimately helps our end users is vastly improved."
